This Week

What We’re Building This Week

Updated week of May 15, 2026

This week connects shoulder-to-shoulder control, hip coverage, and side triangle entries.

Youth Focus

Connection and Safe Hip Coverage

Students will practice moving around their partner, covering the hips, and staying balanced on top.

Word: Connection

Connection means staying close enough to control, but calm enough to move safely with your partner.

Game: Games to Build Connection

Games will focus on safe partner movement, hip coverage, balance, and staying connected.

Glossary:

Sandy note: Connection works best when kids stay close without turning it into a squeeze contest.

What parents can ask after class: How do you stay connected without squeezing?

Adult Focus

Shoulder-to-Shoulder Control Into Side Triangle Entries

Adults will build top control first, cover the hips, then use the defensive hand position to open the side triangle entry.

Warm-up: Shoulder Drag

A warm-up movement pattern for dragging the shoulder line and covering the hips.

Variation: Side Triangle from Knee Drop

Enter the side triangle as the knee drop changes the angle.

Glossary:

Training cue: cover the hips first, then build the triangle.

Sandy note: If the hips are loose, the finish arrives late. Win control before chasing the triangle.

Student Recognition

YAM Hall of Magnificence

YAM means You Are Magnificent. We recognize students who are safe, having fun, and on task.

Safe

They protect their partner, listen closely, and train with control.

Having Fun

They bring energy, curiosity, and a good attitude to the room.

On Task

They stay focused, try the movement, and support the class.

Parent Corner

Progress Shows Up in Small Wins

Some weeks your child builds confidence. Some weeks they build patience. Some weeks they learn how to try again after getting stuck.

Ask this after class:

“What did you learn how to control today?”

Better listening
Safer movement
More confidence asking questions
More comfort trying again

Come Back at the Next Clean Opening

Training works best when you return calmly. Check this week’s focus, text Sandy if you need help choosing a class, and step back in at the next clean opening.

Bring a Friend

Bring a Friend This Week

Invite a classmate, sibling, teammate, or coworker to try class with you. Starting is easier when someone trusted is already in the room.

Hey, I train at Sensei Sandy BJJ in Tannersville. It is calm, beginner-friendly, and the first visit is guided.

Do kids have to compete?

No. Competition is optional. Some families eventually ask about local tournaments, so we built a parent guide for choosing safe, age-appropriate events when the time is right.

Best next step

Reserve a calm Free Intro before you decide anything else.

Visit the room, meet Sandy, learn the safety basics, and choose the right class lane without pressure.
