When a kid feels picked on, they do not need hype. They need a plan.

Most parents do not want their child to “fight back.” They want their child to stand taller, speak clearly, move safely, and know when to get help.

That is what this class is built for. We teach Jiu-Jitsu as calm control, not chaos.

The Sensei Sandy Method

3 skills we build before a child ever needs self-defense

1. Voice

Students practice simple words: “Stop. Back up. I need help.” They learn to speak clearly without escalating.

2. Space

Students learn posture, balance, movement, and how to leave unsafe situations when possible.

3. Control

If someone grabs, pushes, or tackles them, students learn safe grappling responses that protect without punching or kicking.

For New York families: document, report, follow up

In New York, bullying can also involve school reporting rules under DASA. Parents should write down what happened, save screenshots if it happened online, ask who the Dignity Act Coordinator is, and request the school’s written process.

Jiu-Jitsu is not a replacement for school reporting. It gives your child a calmer body, clearer words, and safer options while the adults handle the process.

Bullying Statistics & School Safety Data

Bullying is a real concern for families, and making decisions based on facts helps. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) 2021-22 report, about 19.2% of students ages 12 to 18 reported being bullied during school, and 22% of those students experienced it online or via text. StopBullying.gov defines bullying around unwanted aggressive behavior, power imbalance, and repetition or likely repetition.

Here is what the research shows regarding the effects of bullying and the importance of active parent and school coordination:

  • Adult reporting: Among bullied students, only 44.2% notified an adult at school, meaning more than half of bullying incidents go unreported to school staff. [2]
  • Impact on school attendance: 25.9% of bullied students avoided a location or activity at school, and 7.8% stayed home from school to avoid harassment. [2]
  • Emotional and academic effects: NCES reports 27.8% of bullied students felt negative feelings about themselves, 19.7% experienced negative effects on schoolwork, and 13.4% reported physical health impacts. [2]
  • School intervention success: Standardized PE and martial arts training can help. A judo-based school safety study showed that PE teachers trained for 20 hours who then ran 10 sessions of 50 minutes over 5 weeks saw significant improvements in bullying-related outcomes. [10]

At Sensei Sandy BJJ, we believe training works best when paired with active adult reporting, consistent boundaries, and school process follow-through.
