CHOOSE YOUR QUESTION AREA

Your first class is not a fight. It is a calm, structured safety walkthrough of the room. You can even just watch if you feel nervous.
What happens at my first class?

You'll arrive, meet your coach, learn the basics, and move at your pace. You will not be thrown into hard sparring on day one.

  • We explain the room before training starts.
  • You can watch first if you feel nervous.
  • You can text Sandy before arrival with any concern.
What should I wear?

Wear clean athletic clothes without zippers or pockets. A fitted shirt and shorts or leggings work well. We help with uniform choices after your first visit.

Do I need experience?

No. The room is built for beginners. You will learn positions, movement, tapping, and partner safety before intensity increases.

Can I text before booking?

Yes. Text Sandy at (917) 736-8649. A quick message is often the easiest way to pick the right first class.

Is it safe for kids?

Yes, when the room is structured. We use supervised rounds, clear rules, tapping, partner matching, and coach-controlled intensity.

What ages are kids classes?

Kids classes generally serve elementary-aged students. Borderline placements are based on size, maturity, attention span, and safety.

Will this help with bullying?

We teach posture, boundaries, escape skills, calm communication, and confidence under pressure. The goal is not aggression. The goal is self-control. Read our bullying and self-defense FAQ for details.

Can parents watch?

Yes, where space allows. Parents can watch from the lounge area while we keep the training space calm and focused.

Will BJJ make my teen more aggressive?

No. Done correctly, Jiu-Jitsu teaches restraint, respect, consequences, and self-regulation. Teens learn how to stay calm instead of escalate.

What ages are teens classes?

Teens classes generally serve middle school and high school students. Border ages are placed by maturity, size, and safety.

Is teen training hard sparring?

Not for beginners. Teens start with structured lessons, safe resistance, and coach-guided rounds. Intensity is earned gradually.

Can teen athletes train during their sports season?

Yes. Start with a manageable schedule and adjust intensity around practices, games, and recovery.

Do I have to spar?

Beginners do not need hard sparring. You begin with controlled drills, positional games, and safe partner work.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is grappling based on control, escapes, leverage, and submissions. There is no striking.

Can I start at my current level?

Yes. You start calmly, learn the room, and build fitness through consistent training.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes. Private lessons are useful for confidence, specific problems, injury-sensitive training, or faster beginner onboarding.

How do you keep beginners safe?

We use beginner lanes, partner matching, clear stop signals, tapping culture, and coach-controlled intensity.

What does tapping mean?

Tapping is the safety signal. It means pause immediately. We teach it early so students feel safe asking for a reset.

Is there striking?

No. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Sensei Sandy BJJ is grappling, positioning, control, and escapes.

How does pricing work?

Core Culture runs in 12-week tracks: Youth $550 and Adult $715. Annual options are available for families and adults who want the best value.

What if my plans change?

Text Sandy to reschedule. The system is designed to be flexible, low-stress, and human.

Is there a visitor option?

Yes. Visitors can ask about day pass or short-term options. Local residents should begin with the Free Intro.
