Positions

Side Control (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)

Side control is a top control position where you pin across your partner’s upper body from the side.

Beginner Translation

You are beside someone with chest pressure, making it hard for them to turn, stand, or recover guard.

What It Does

Side control stabilizes top position, sets up transitions to mount or back control, and opens several submissions.

Where You See It

You see it after guard passes, takedowns, and drills focused on staying heavy without squeezing too hard.

Why It Matters

It teaches beginners how to use structure and weight instead of muscle, and it teaches the bottom person how to stay calm under pressure.
