The Beginner’s Guide to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: How to Win at "Human Chess"

Why the smartest game in the world is played on the ground.

Updated February 2026 | Sensei Sandy BJJ | Kingston & Tannersville

Welcome to the mats. If you are looking for the chaos of an action movie—rage, seeing "red," and flying kicks—you are in the wrong place.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an intellectual pursuit disguised as a physical one. It is physics, leverage, and geometry applied to the human body in real-time. We call it "Human Chess" because raw power is a liability without a plan. In this game, you are both the player and the piece.

💡 Quick Tip: "What Do I Wear?"

Top: A fitted t-shirt or rash guard (loose fabric gets caught!).

Bottom: Athletic shorts or leggings (zipper-free to protect our mats and your partners).

Feet: Barefoot on the mats; sandals/slides for the bathroom.

We have loaner gear ready for your arrival!

Myth vs. Reality: De-mystifying the Fight

Movie Myth 🎬 The BJJ Reality 🥋
Chaos: Screaming and aggression Focus: Controlled breathing and strategic calmness
Damage: Trying to hurt the opponent Control: Trying to immobilize the opponent
Exclusive: Only for the young and massive Universal: Relies on leverage; accessible to all ages/sizes
Striking: Punches and kicks Grappling: Takedowns, holds, and submissions

The Objective: Solving the Puzzle

In boxing, the goal is often impact. In Jiu-Jitsu, the goal is control.

We seek a "submission"—a joint lock or a choke—that forces a checkmate. When caught, your partner will "tap out" (tap you or the mat twice).

The Tap is not defeat. It is a reset button. It is the ultimate safety tool that allows us to practice dangerous techniques at 100% effort with 0% injury.

The Core Loop: Position > Submission

You cannot checkmate the King before you move your pawns. In BJJ, we follow a strict hierarchy of operations. You must "climb the ladder."

  • Advance Position: Move past their legs and control their hips.
  • Stabilize: Secure the position so they cannot escape.
  • Submit: Only attack when your position is undeniable.

The Golden Rule: Better Position = Less Energy. When you are in a dominant spot, you can rest while your opponent carries your weight. Beginners often try to grab heads (guillotines) from bad spots. Don't take the bait! Focus on your base first.

The BJJ Paradox: The "Guard"

This is the hardest concept for new students to grasp. In a street fight, being on your back is a disaster. In BJJ, the Guard weaponizes your back.

The Bottom Player: Uses their legs as a shield (frames) to manage distance, sweep (flip) the opponent, or launch attacks.

The Top Player: Must solve the puzzle of the legs to get close. This is called "Passing the Guard."

Dominating the Board: Mount & Back

Once you solve the puzzle of the legs, you enter the scoring zone.

Mount: You are sitting on top of their torso. Gravity is your best friend here. You apply heavy pressure to exhaust them effectively.

Back Control: This is "Checkmate." You are behind them, attached like a backpack. They cannot see you, which means they cannot effectively defend against what you do next.

Safety & Culture in the Hudson Valley

BJJ is a contact sport, but it requires immense trust. Whether you are training at our HQ in Kingston or up the mountain at Sensei Sandy BJJ in Tannersville, our culture is our strongest asset.

  • The Fist Bump: Every round starts with a fist bump. It’s a verbal contract that says, "I will keep you safe."
  • Zero Ego: You will get tapped out. A lot. That isn't losing; that is learning.
  • Longevity: We prioritize being able to train tomorrow over winning the round today.

For surgical coaching and deeper refinement, Private Lessons are always available.

Stop Watching, Start Playing

You can read books about swimming all day, but eventually, you have to get wet. BJJ is the most challenging, complex, and rewarding game you will ever play.
