HOW WE TRAIN TOGETHER

What a good Friday round looks like

Listen

Know the starting position, scoring rule, and stopping signal before the round begins.

Keep Going

If the first attack or escape fails, reset your thinking and stay in the problem.

Be Good to Your Partner

Give a real round without using speed, strength, or emotion carelessly.

Keep going means staying engaged with a useful challenge. A tap, injury, unsafe feeling, or coach stoppage always means stop.

Coached rounds

Kids get real resistance, clear feedback, and another chance to solve the problem.

Coach-planned matchups

Coach-selected pairings create the right challenge without careless speed, strength, or mismatches.

Parent viewing & takeaway

Parents watch, kids get useful feedback, and each student leaves with one success and one next problem to bring back to class.

Fair Starting Positions

Coaches choose connected starting positions so kids work on a useful problem right away without spending a short round chasing, stalling, or negotiating distance. Fair pairing means a safe, useful challenge—not guaranteed equal outcomes. The goal is problem-solving, not winning a trophy.

Starting examples may include:
  • Shoulder to shoulder on the knees
  • Seated guard connection
  • Double octopus guard
  • Other coach-selected positions
