Basic Jiu Jitsu Terms for Beginners

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a sport. People learn to move with care on a mat. They use skill, balance, and kind words. You can learn one word at a time. These basic jiu jitsu terms can help you follow class.

BJJ, the mat, and your partner

BJJ means Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. People also say jiu jitsu. It is a grappling sport. In class, you learn moves with a partner. Your coach shows each move first.

A mat is the soft floor for class. Students train on the mat. They wear clean gear and follow coach cues. A partner is the person who drills with you. Both people help each other learn.

The tap

A tap is a signal for a break. Tap the mat or your partner. You can also say “tap.” When practicing a hold like a choke, tap early and move with care. Your partner lets go and gives you space. The coach can help you reset and start again.

Position and guard

A position is where you are on the mat. Each spot gives you a new way to move. You learn to stay calm, look, and pick a good next step.

Guard is a way to use your legs. Your legs help you keep a partner in front of you. Guard can help you make space and set up a sweep.

Mount and side control

Mount is a top spot. One student is above the other student. The top student keeps a steady base. The bottom student can use a frame and look for a safe way to move.

Side control is a top spot beside your partner. The top student keeps good balance. The bottom student can turn to a side and make space with a frame.

Frame, base, and shrimp

A frame is a strong shape made with an arm or leg. It helps you make space. Keep your hands open and follow your coach as you learn.

Base means a steady way to hold your body. Hands, feet, and knees can help you stay balanced. A good base helps you move with care.

A shrimp is a hip move. Turn to your side, push with your feet, and slide your hips back. This move can help you make space.

Sweep, escape, grip, and round

A sweep or sweep single moves a partner from a top spot to the mat. It uses good timing and balance. Your coach can show a slow, safe way to learn it.

An escape is a move that helps you get to a better spot. Use your frame, move your hips, and listen to your coach.

A grip is a hold on cloth or an arm. In Gi class, students wear a Gi. The Gi is a jacket and pants made for class. Your coach shows where to place each grip.

A round is a set time to train with a partner. Move at the pace your coach sets. Take turns, use kind words, and learn one thing at a time.
