Safety &
Standards (Youth + Adults)

Your safety is non-negotiable. Kids, teens, and adults get safe movement, clean space, and clear behavior standards.

  • Supervised Sparring
  • Clean Mats
  • Zero Bullying

Read our safety promise

Kids/Teens -> start here and Adults (18+) -> start here

Beginner Lane = no hard sparring on day one.

  • Youth ages 6-17 are recommended to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily (CDC updated December 4, 2025). CDC
  • In 2021-22, about 19% of students ages 12-18 reported being bullied at school; among bullied students, 22% reported bullying online or by text (NCES updated July 2024). NCES
  • A 2025 sports medicine study reported BJJ injury incidence of 5.5 per 1,000 training hours and 55.9 per 1,000 matches. We use this context to enforce partner matching and coached intensity. PubMed

Why "Sensei Bully" Is Part of Our Safety Standards

Bullying is not rare, and it is not only "words." In 2021-2022, 19.2% of students ages 12-18 reported being bullied during school. NCES: Student Bullying indicator

So our promise is simple: Jiu-Jitsu is never used to intimidate, in class, in the lobby, or in the stairwell.

The Difference Between a Real Academy and "Small Training"

Sensei Sandy BJJ is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu studio above Main Street in Tannersville. That means:

  • A consistent safety culture that families can see every visit
  • Structured classes with clear skill goals, not chaotic open mats
  • Coaching that prioritizes calm control, tapping early, and safe partner matching

Cleanliness & Hygiene (Because Contact Sports Demand Standards)

The CDC notes that germs like MRSA can spread in athletic facilities due to shared equipment and skin-to-skin contact, and prevention includes hygiene plus cleaning and disinfecting equipment and facilities. CDC: MRSA Prevention in Athletic Facilities

  • Clean gear and short nails
  • No shoes on the mat, no bare feet off the mat
  • No training while sick
  • Regular mat and surface disinfection

Beginner Lane Standard (Kids, Teens, and Adults)

Beginner Lane means:

  • No hard sparring on day one
  • A slower start with positional training and supervised pace
  • "Tap-first" culture that is explained before intensity is added

Sensei Bully Policy: Jiu-Jitsu Is Never Used to Intimidate

Behavior & Bullying

Using Jiu-Jitsu to bully, show off, or pressure someone is grounds for removal.

  • Hands stay to ourselves in the lobby and stairwell
  • No hitting, kicking, or tackling outside drills
  • We listen to parents about school issues and make a plan when a child needs extra support

If a Bump or Scare Happens

Even in safe training, kids can get overwhelmed. Here is our safety culture in action:

1
Stop the action
2
Check body
(Ice, rest, sit out)
3
Check feelings
(Short reset talk)
4
Tell parents
(Full transparency)

Parent Communication

Parents are welcome to watch class. We explain what we are working on and why. If your child needs extra support, we make a plan with you.
