Beginner lane: no hard sparring on day one.
Our Safety Promise
We don’t believe in chaos or “toughening them up.” Kids, teens, and adults get the same calm standards with age-appropriate drills.
At Sensei Sandy BJJ, we aim for fewer injuries than playground time, rules kids can understand, and calm coaching even when things get intense.
If something feels unsafe, we slow it down, shrink it, or stop it.
Youth Safety (Kids + Teens)
We match partners by size, energy, and experience. Warm-ups teach falling, tapping, and boundary language before any takedown work.
Parents stay in the loop, and we always have a quiet corner if a child needs a reset.
Adult Safety (18+)
Beginner lane pace with clear consent: you learn how to tap early, pause often, and avoid white-knuckle scrambles. If you want a structured way to stand up safely, see our wrestle-ups guide.
- Beginner lane: no hard sparring on day one.
- Calm tempo; partners stop the moment they feel a tap.
- No ego culture—ask for breaks, swap partners anytime.
How We Keep Bodies Safe for Youth & Adults
Three rules we follow every single class, whether you are 7 or 47.
1. Fall Training First
Before takedowns, students learn to protect the head, neck, and spine. We teach "banana back" posture and controlled landings so joints (and the antique store downstairs) stay happy. See the breakfalls guide and the Neck Cranks Longevity Guide for the Sensei Sandy approach to safe rolling.
2. Smart Matching
We match by age, size, and energy level. You will not see big kids rag-dolling tiny kids or teens smashing little ones. If a match isn't working, we switch it immediately. No drama.
3. Supervised Only
Live practice is timed, supervised, and kept in defined areas. We teach "Tap early, Tap often." Partners must stop immediately when they feel or hear a tap. No unsupervised play-fighting.
Cleanliness & Hygiene
We run a clean-mats, clean-gear academy.
We would rather have one missed class than one community infection.
- Mats cleaned and disinfected after training blocks.
- No shoes on the mat. No bare feet off the mat.
- No training while sick (fever, cough, stomach issues).
- Students must have clean uniforms and short nails.
Coaching Standards
We reward effort, control, and kindness, not just "winning rounds."
- Planned warm-ups, not random workouts.
- Respectful corrections. No yelling or shaming.
- Age-appropriate language.
Behavior & Bullying
Using Jiu-Jitsu to bully or show off is grounds for removal.
- Hands stay to ourselves in the lobby & stairwell.
- No hitting, kicking, or tackling outside drills.
- We listen to parents about school issues.
If a Bump or Scare Happens
Even in safe training, kids can get overwhelmed. Here is our safety culture in action.
(Ice, rest, sit out)
(Short reset talk)
(Full transparency)
Parent Communication
You never have to guess. Parents are welcome to watch class. We explain what we’re working on and why. If your child needs extra support, we make a plan with you. You get straight answers, not jargon.
