A calm first class for first-timers

If you want a welcoming community with no big egos, start with a first class where we explain the room, rules, and the gentle art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before we expect you to perform.

What happens

Your first small-group class is a guided learning experience.

Sensei Sandy teaches beginners in a small Tannersville room with clear steps, careful partner matching, and enough explanation that you know what is happening next.

1

Meet the room

You see where class starts, where to put your things, and how the studio works before training begins.

2

Learn the safety rules

You learn how to tap, how partners care for each other, and what controlled training should feel like.

3

Learn concepts and strategies

You warm up, learn basic strategies, and get new skills under your belt at a beginner pace.

The Difference

Calm beginner-friendly martial arts means more than a soft slogan.

It means the first visit is organized, we teach grappling without striking, we welcome questions, and the coach gives you one clear next step instead of leaving you to decode the room alone.

If you are an adult beginner in the Catskills, start with the adult program. If you are choosing for a child, use the kids program. If you want one-on-one support first, see private coaching.

Questions

First-Timer FAQ

How is the first class paced for first-timers?

The first visit is built around a room tour, safety walkthrough, Beginner Lane orientation, and a clear next step.

What happens in my first Jiu-Jitsu class?

You meet Sandy, see the room, learn how tapping works, get paired carefully, and move through beginner-paced instruction before any intensity increases.

Do I have to spar hard on day one?

No. We focus on the gentle art of control and leverage, ensuring smaller grapplers feel safe and welcomed. The first small-group class is coached. Beginners start with safe, coached, beginner-appropriate partner activities where Sandy adjusts the position, partner, pace, and resistance.

What if I want a quieter first step?

Private classes are available for beginners who want one-on-one coaching before or alongside Classes.
