“Will there be kids my child's age?”

Parents ask me this when they look for kids BJJ classes near Hunter, NY. It is a good place to start. Your child's training partners help shape their time on the mat.

I teach mixed-age youth classes in Tannersville. I also stay in touch with families. We can talk about your child and the group before you make plans.

Start with a chat

Tell me about your child. What do they like to do? Have they tried a class with a partner? What would help them feel at home?

You can also share what you hope they will learn. Some families want a shared skill. Some want a place where their child can move and meet peers.

We can use that chat to discuss the current group. I can help coordinate with families whose kids are close in age.

Age is part of the picture

Age matters. So do size, skill, and time spent on the mat.

Each child brings their own pace. One may ask lots of questions. One may like time to try a task and see how it feels.

Older kids learn why it helps to work with a range of partners. They learn to share the task with someone whose size, skill, or pace differs from theirs.

That is part of learning BJJ together.

What does partner practice look like?

I give the group a simple task. Kids then work with each other while I give feedback.

They get time to move, try, ask, and try again. I ask for their input too. Their questions help me make the task clear.

Before an activity with a hold that ends in a tap, we practice tapping. Learning to tap and respond to a tap is part of class.

Can we keep talking as my child learns?

Yes. Families are welcome to stay in touch about their child's training.

A first chat gives us a place to start. Later chats help us discuss how class is going and what may fit next.

You can also watch from the couch outside the classroom.
