Parents who watch youth BJJ may wonder what each task is for.

In my youth classes in Tannersville, each task has a goal. Kids learn what to try. Then they get time to try it with a partner.

I want them to move, ask, and learn as I coach. Their own ideas have a place in that work.

A simple goal for practice

One idea I teach is control of the space between a partner's armpits and knees.

I call that space “capital real estate.” The name helps us talk about what matters in each spot.

Think of who has the ball in a ball game. That helps you make sense of the play.

In BJJ, we look at how well we control this space. Kids can see how they are doing. They can use that idea in many tasks.

A shoulder hold has a goal

In the week of October 12, 2026, youths worked on a figure-four shoulder hold. We also call it a double wrist lock.

Kids learned how to control the shoulder apart from the rest of the body. We talked about where to place the body and how to move.

We also talked about leverage. This means how you place your body to help a move work. Kids can try these ideas with partners of more than one size.

Before any task that involves a hold ending in a tap, we practice tapping. Students learn to tap and to respond to their partner's tap.

Questions help me teach

A child may grasp the goal yet find it hard to use a gentle touch.

That is useful feedback for me. I ask if my words make sense. A student may share a concern or ask how the idea fits the task.

I explain more. Then kids try again with a partner who moves as they work.

That exchange helps kids connect an idea to what they feel on the mat.

What can parents watch?

Parents can watch from the couch outside the classroom. A visit gives you a chance to see the class and ask about your own child.

You can also see youth class footage.

Does my child need BJJ terms first?

We can start with simple tasks and plain words. Terms gain meaning as kids use them in practice.

For kids BJJ in Tannersville, the goal is a clear place to begin and room to learn.
