Movements

Transition (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)

A transition is the movement from one position, control, or attack to another before the situation fully settles.

Beginner Translation

A transition is the in-between part where something is changing and you need to stay organized.

What It Does

Transitions connect the whole game by letting students move from guard to sweep, pass to pin, or back take to choke.

Where You See It

You see transitions after passes, during scrambles, between top positions, and anytime someone moves before the other person reacts.

Why It Matters

Beginners often focus only on named positions, but much of BJJ is won in the space between them.
