Positions

Half Guard (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)

Half guard is a position where one of the top player’s legs is trapped between the bottom player’s legs.

Beginner Translation

You have only part of guard, not full leg control, but you still have real options to recover, sweep, or slow things down.

What It Does

Half guard creates a checkpoint between full control and full escape, making it important for both attackers and defenders.

Where You See It

You see it during guard passing, transitions from side control, and many scrambles where one leg gets caught.

Why It Matters

Half guard teaches beginners that imperfect positions still have structure. You do not need everything to still have a plan.
