More Time to Try: How I Teach BJJ

I want students to spend class time doing jiu-jitsu. I give a clear task, let them work with a partner, and offer feedback as they try.

Youth students get simple directions for shared work. Adults get movement tasks, goals, and concepts to try with each other.

We train at Sensei Sandy BJJ in Tannersville. My aim is to give you room to make sense of what you feel and do.

Find the space that matters

I use the term “capital real estate” for the space between a person's armpits and knees. We look at the quality of control in that area.

If you know ball sports, think about who has the ball. That helps explain why I want you to know who has control in a position.

In BJJ, your partner moves as you work. You use the idea to help read what is going on. Then you can try a response.

Ask, try, and talk

At times, students understand a goal but need help using it with care. I ask if the way I explained it makes sense.

They may raise a concern or ask for more context. I clarify the task. Then they return to practice with a partner who gives them resistance.

You can ask for help as you learn. I also welcome input from people who come to watch class.

One student's next step

On October 8, 2026, we worked on reading a partner's position as they tried to connect to the legs.

On October 14, I saw a youth student use that idea in a more open round with me. The student noticed my aim and chose a response.

They changed their base and improved a hold with care. I tapped to end the round.

That is one moment I saw. It shows what this student tried in that round. I value seeing students use an idea in a new setting.

The student had room to read the task and choose a move. I could see how they used what we had worked on. It gave us a clear point to talk about next.
