Can Parents and Kids Train BJJ Together?
By Sandy · Updated
I encourage families to train BJJ. Parents and kids can share a skill and have their own space to learn.
What that looks like depends on the child and the class. Some families share an interest in BJJ while taking different classes. Some youths also join adult class after I approve that step.
We can talk about which path fits your family at our Tannersville studio.
A shared skill can take many forms
A parent and child can each have their own time on the mat. Then they have something to talk about on the way home.
One may be working on a new movement. The other may have a question about balance or control.
They can share that interest while learning at their own pace.
For some youths, the next step includes time in adult class. That takes a separate chat with me.
Youths build a base first
First, a youth must finish at least one full youth program term. Then I can review if adult class may fit. See the current plan details.
I look at how they train.
I check how they care for a partner and respond to taps. I watch how they move and follow the task. I also look for how they ask for help.
These skills help me judge if adult class is a useful next step.
Finishing a term is one part of that choice. I must also approve the step.
Please arrange the step with me
Talk with me before you make plans for a youth to attend adult class.
We can talk about how they train and which class may fit. I can also explain who they can train with.
Youths in adult class may train with assigned youth partners, their own parent, or me.
We talk through this so you know how your child will take part.
Some students train in youth class and then adult class too. I approve that path based on how the student trains.
Can we watch before we decide?
Parents can watch youth class from the couch outside the classroom.
A visit lets you see the space and ask questions. Tell me what your family hopes to gain from training.
You may want a shared hobby, more time moving, or a skill you can each explore. Those goals help us start the chat.
Where should our family begin?
Look at the kids program, teen program, and adult classes.
Check the current schedule, then reserve your free first visit. Families from Hunter, Windham, Haines Falls, and the Catskills can ask me what would fit them.
